Here’s how to make sure your car’s AC makes it through Summer 2017
As you prepare your Hyundai to handle the insane summer heat headed our way, don’t forget to give your vehicle’s air conditioning components a little bit of extra pampering. After all, your AC is your first line of defense against rising temperatures. We know you don’t want to be stuck in highway traffic for hours on an August afternoon with no cool air to save you.
Thankfully, it’s pretty simple to test your cooling system out to make sure everything is in decent condition.
First, remember that if your Hyundai has a cabin air filter, it needs to be replaced on a regular basis. A dirty air filter will decrease the air flow in your vehicle’s cabin and will drastically reduce the effectiveness of the air conditioner.
If you’ve gotten that out of the way, you can move on to a simple thermometer test. Slide a thermometer into the center vent on your car’s dashboard and then go on a joy ride with the air conditioner set to the maximum setting. (If you don’t have a thermometer, you can pick one up at any auto parts store for less than $20.) If the temperature outside is at least 80 degrees, the temperature of the air coming out of your vents should be around 45 degrees. If your thermometer shows a reading of any higher than 45 degrees, it’s time to bring your Hyundai to your favorite Algonquin Hyundai dealer for a quick service check-up.
Of course, it’s always best to get ahead of the problem before an issue presents itself. Here are a few preventative measures you can take to keep your Hyundai’s air conditioning system in tip-top shape for summer:
- Run the defrost mode for 5-10 minutes once a week. It may sound odd, but this can actually prevent mildew from developing inside your vents by cleaning out excessive moisture.
- Re-charge your air conditioning system regularly. Every two years, bring your car to a Hyundai service center near you to refresh your cooling system with gas and lubricant.
- Use your air conditioner in the winter. We promise this isn’t counter-productive! Your air conditioner doesn’t just cool the air inside your vehicle’s cabin–it also removes humidity from the air. This is a great way to remove fog from your windshield and it’s also a handy excuse to check up on the viability of your AC before summer hits.
