Fuel Economy Tips: How to Get Better Gas Mileage

Fuel Economy Tips

Gas for your vehicle is an everyday expense. You probably spend more on gas every month than you would like to. However, there are some ways in which you can work to get better fuel economy, and you can save a little money on gas. Check out some of our best tips below.

The first, and most obvious way to improve your fuel efficiency is to not speed or accelerate rapidly. Driving fast with quick acceleration is not good for your fuel economy.

According to the US Department of Energy, “Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic.”

Another way to get better gas mileage is to use your cruise control and stay right around the speed limit when you drive on the highway. Once you get up to 75 and 80 miles per hour, your car uses up significantly more fuel to maintain that speed. Maintain a nice cruising speed to improve your gas mileage and save some gas money.

It is also important to keep in mind that short trips are detrimental to your fuel efficiency. When planning for an errand, try to pair it together with other tasks, so you can do one longer trip rather than several shorter trips.

Another thing to keep in mind is the stuff you are carrying with you. Consumer Reports said, “Securing things on the roof increases aerodynamic drag, making the engine work harder and hurting fuel economy. When we tested a  2013 Honda  Accord at a steady 65 mph, it got 42 mpg with nothing on the roof. Adding an empty bike rack dropped the mileage by 5 mpg. A wind deflector reduced the wind noise but cut gas mileage to 35 mpg. And with two bikes on the rack, gas mileage dropped to 27 mpg, a whopping 15-mpg difference overall.”
