New Luxury Genesis Plug-In Hybrid Confirmed by Hyundai
Remember when plug-in hybrids were a novelty? Of course, with the world being far more environmentally conscious than ever before, such a thing like a hybrid vehicle is seen less as a novelty and more as a necessity. However, that does not mean such a thing cannot feel like a luxury, and automakers know this. That is to say, Hyundai recently announced that it will begin production of a Genesis plug-in hybrid model. All of this was confirmed recently by Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski in an interview he did with Automotive News. “Some of those [plug-in hybrids] will take the form of the Genesis side of our business,” Zuchowski notes. “We believe alternative-propulsion engines are going to be really important—even more important in the luxury market than they are in the mainstream market.”
Zuchowski continued to note in the interview that a plug-in hybrid was a good transition point between traditional powertrains and what he sees as the eventual dominance of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. Hyundai, of course, is one of the leading producers of fuel cell vehicles, already offering a proverbial fleet of them for customers. But the Genesis model plug-in hybrid will be the company’s first luxury model. By doing this, Hyundai hopes to compete with the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and Volvo, who all offer plug-in versions of their current luxury models, with Cadillac and Infiniti preparing to join the fray.
Unfortunately, that is about as much information as we currently know at this time. That is to say, the Hyundai CEO did not go on to mention just what vehicles the automaker plans to introduce as plug-in hybrid luxury models. However, we do all know that Hyundai does plan to have up to six vehicles in hits lineup by the end of this decade—that is, the G90, an updated <itemprop=”name”>Hyundai Genesis that will be redesigned as the G80, a production version of the Genesis New York concept that will be called the G70, and two SUVs—all of which would make a perfect candidate for the plug-in hybrid model. However, only time will tell, so let’s all just count ourselves lucky that at least one (if not more) of these vehicles will, one hundred percent, be available as a luxury plug-in hybrid.
