2017 Hyundai Elantra is Super Fuel Efficient and Powerful
Hyundai fans in the market for a high-fuel efficiency vehicle, listen up: the 2017 Elantra Eco has arrived.
The Elantra Eco is set to become one of the most efficient cars on the market–it boasts a 40-mpg EPA highway rating with some drivers reporting mileage as high as 42- and 43-MPG. Car and Driver even pitted a regular Elantra Limited against the Eco on a mixture of highways, twisty back roads, and city streets to see which came out ahead. We weren’t surprised to learn that the Eco returned 42 MPG in the test, giving it a 6-MPG margin of victory against the Elantra Limited.
How is the Eco capable of such incredible ratings? It’s thanks to the vehicle’s 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Speed isn’t really the name of the game here (the Eco’s engine makes just 128 horsepower, 19 less than the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter in other Elantras), it’s torque: The Eco has an extra 24 pound-feet of it.
The Eco’s four-cylinder hits its torque plateau at just 1400 rpm when it delivers an incredible 156 pound-feet of acceleration. This overflow of power means that the Eco jumps to 60 MPH a full half a second quicker than any of the other Elantras.
It’s not just torque that sets the Eco apart from the rest of the Elantra family, the vehicle’s transmission, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic that stands in for the traditional six-speed automatic, lends the car an entirely different feel. Rather than creeping along once you’ve lifted your foot off the brake after a stop, the Eco leaps forward with a sporty eagerness unique on the market.
The Eco’s interior features many of the same components that other Elantra models do, but with slight updates. The cabin is quieter than the others since the car’s turbocharger provides a white noise muffling effect. Plus it handles with the same ease and composure you’ve come to expect from all Hyundai vehicles. The vehicle’s styling has been described by Car and Driver as “handsome”–it’s modern and sophisticated, mature but not dated.
The Eco also comes with many of Hyundai’s top amenities, including solar control glass, a driver’s blind spot mirror, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, remote keyless entry and more.
The best part? Not only is the Eco beautiful, sophisticated, powerful and efficient, it’s also affordable. The Eco is available starting at roughly $20,000.
