Hyundai among the Top Contenders for 2017 Car of the Year
Every year, a select number of independent automotive journalists from the United States and Canada test drive 44 vehicles in an attempt to narrow them down to 29 of the absolute best, separated by three categories: car, truck, and utility vehicle. Those 29 are then narrowed down to three, which is then itself narrowed down to one. These are the stipulations necessary in order to choose the winner of the North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year (NACTOY), and the first round, so to speak, of this prestigious 23-year-old prize (that is, the narrowing down from 44 to 29) have subsequently taken place and Hyundai has put up some very good numbers as far as the North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year is concerned.
Among those to make the list, Hyundai/Kia Motor Group comes in second with regard to the number of represented vehicles that have been nominated. That is to say, Hyundai/Kia Motor Group tops out with four nominations for the 2017 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year, which includes the likes of the Genesis G90, the automaker’s first foray into the world of Luxury vehicles. The only automaker with more nominations than Hyundai/Kia Motor Group is General Motors Co., who sit at seven vehicle nominations.
Of course, we will have to wait until January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit for the official announcement with regard to the winner of the 2017 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year award. Last year saw the Honda Civic and the Volvo XC90 taking the prize home in their respective categories, but judging by the amount of entries Hyundai has on the list, this could very well be the automaker’s year, so to speak. The four Hyundai/Kia vehicles to officially make the list of contenders for the 2017 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year award include the likes of the aforementioned Genesis G90, the Hyundai Elantra, the Kia Cadenza, and the Kia Sportage.
Of course, being recognized by your peers for your outstanding achievements is surely an amazing thing, but—as cliché as it does sound—for Hyundai/Kia to have four vehicles make the list is, in and of itself, quite the honor. I mean, think about the sheer number of vehicles that come out in any given year; to have more than one of your company’s automobiles up for consideration is quite amazing.
