New 2017 Hyundai Veloster is a Truly Unique Vehicle
Back when the Hyundai Veloster was first unveiled, the Internet was abuzz with theories regarding the vehicle’s somewhat strange name. The one that seems the most convincing to me goes like this: It’s pretty well known at this point that Hyundai drew inspiration from motorcycles in order to build their Veloster. A motorcycle, of course, is often referred to as a “bike.” Now, an early word for bicycle was “velocipede.” There were usually many types of velocipedes, but the most popular were the hilarious-looking penny-farthing from England and the heavy metal-sounding boneshaker from France. (You have almost certainly seen a penny-farthing before—it has one giant front wheel and a tiny back wheel and looks like it is almost impossible to ride; the boneshaker tones this down with the front wheel slightly larger than the back; the boneshaker is probably the closest design to a modern-day bicycle.) In any event, the word “velocipede” comes from the Latin velox meaning “swift” or “speedy” (the same root can be found in words like “velocity”) and pedem meaning “foot.” So, that accounts for the suffix of the Hyundai Veloster, but what about the prefix, -ster? Well, we usually use this suffix to point to someone who is good at something: e.g., master, jokester, prankster, hipster, barrister, huckster, ect. ect. In this sense, “Veloster” could come from an interesting combination of the Latin word velox and the prefix “-ster,” meaning roughly a master of speed.
Of course, this is a unique way of going about naming a vehicle, but it’s not the only unique thing associated with the Veloster. In fact, the new 2017 Hyundai Veloster model swings for the fences, so to speak, with regard to its interesting design, giving the world something truly innovative while, at the same time, not drifting too far as to present something ridiculous. Probably the most noticeably different feature regarding the 2017 Veloster has to be its three-door design. That is to say, the vehicle offers a driver’s door and two passenger doors, something Hyundai notes will “[offer] good looks and easy access.”
Under the hood, customers have two options—both of which are quite nice. First, there’s the standard package that harnesses a 1.6-liter inline-4 engine that pushes around 138-horsepower. The next option is the 2017 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, which offers a twin-scroll turbocharger and boasts an output of 201 horsepower with 195 pounds-per-square-foot of torque.
All in all, the 2017 Veloster is an excellent option if you’re looking to make a statement while, at the same time, scooping up a practical and affordable vehicle. The standard 2017 Hyundai Veloster starts at just under $20,000 and the Turbo model at $23,000.
