Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Leaves Competitors in the Dust When it Comes to Efficiency
If you’re looking for a car that represents a bold new step forward, the new 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is the vehicle you’ve been waiting for.
The Ioniq is the hybrid model that all future Hyundai electric and hybrid vehicles will take their cues from. It’s highly efficient–more efficient, in fact, than its competitors by a mile–and its styling has been described as quirky, fresh and ultra-modern. Dimensionally, it’s similar to the Toyota Prius and the Chevrolet Cruze, but any Hyundai dealership worth its salt will tell you that neither of those vehicles stack up to the Ioniq.
First and foremost, the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is practically unbeatable when it comes to fuel economy. The vehicle is able to achieve an EPA combined rating of up to 58 mpg. The Ioniq’s closest competitor, the Toyota Prius, only gets 52 mpg depending on the weather and the terrain. How does the Ioniq do it? Through a perfect marriage of electric and gas engine components.
The Ioniq features a 104-hp Atkinson-cycle 1.6-liter gasoline engine which boasts 40 percent thermal efficiency (a number you typically don’t find outside of diesel models), a dual-clutch automatic transmission to ensure a light, super-smooth driving experience, a lightweight 1.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, an aluminum hood, liftgate and suspension components, and an exterior that has been aerodynamically designed to achieve an unbelievably low 0.24 coefficient of drag.
For all its pizzazz, the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t feel the need to show off. Its styling is modern and classically sleek with a horizontally oriented dashboard, tasteful trim highlights and plenty of soft-touch interior textiles to keep you and your passengers comfortable. The cabin is spacious without being unnecessarily cavernous–though the second row of seats does fold down if you find yourself in need of extra storage space.
The Ioniq’s instrument cluster is designed for a simple analog look but a 7-inch touchscreen is readily available with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and all the latest bells and whistles if you need them. Should you want something with a bit more tech, the Technology package is available for upgrade and includes an 8-inch touchscreen among other goodies.
The Hyundai Ioniq is available in three models: a hybrid, an EV and a plug-in, which will be available this Fall. The EV model features a 120-hp electric motor with an estimated 124-mile range and a fast charger that can recharge the battery to 80 percent in just 20 minutes. The plug-in will have a gas engine and a 60-hp electric motor.
