New Hyundai Models Shine In SUV Market
Years ago, it would be hard to imagine where Hyundai currently stands – SUV sales now represent about half the brand’s US sales. The new midsized Santa Fe and a updated version of its compact Tucson, help lead the way. In fact, Hyundai’s SUV sales grew by 17 percent in September of this year thanks to the help of the two strong-selling vehicles. Hyundai has been supporting the Santa Fe with a strong marketing campaign, centralized around millennials and their families. The TV-advertising campaign visually illustrates maximum cargo space – for example, a dual-row panoramic sunroof which allows aesthetic views. It also focuses on safety features, such as the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist and Safe Exit Assist. Dean Evans, Hyundai’s Chief Marketing Officer, said, describing their aim for their marketing campaign, “We’ve got every base covered now. This is the year of the SUV for us.” US consumers are beginning to shift their demographic toward larger, midsize and SUV vehicles and Hyundai is giving them what they want.
Although sales for the Santa Fe are down from last year, Hyundai continues to push their product with the new version. The Tucson, on the other hand, is demolishing last year’s sales; moving into second place behind the Elantra sedan in Hyundai’s best-selling rankings. “Santa Fe is a combination of a rugged vehicle and a family hauler, which is what this segment needs,” says Evans.
The Santa Fe has room for seven passengers and employs a 3.3-liter V6 engine that creates 290 horsepower and a six-speed transmission. The interior is beyond roomy and features reclinable second row seating, a rare feature in midsize SUVs. The model has claimed a spot on the new Ward’s 10 Best UX list, a competition that voices user experiences in driver-assist technologies, navigation, connectivity, and voice-activated systems.
The Tucson also displays many added features that are worth the money. It includes a power driver seat, heated front seat and a 7-inch touchscreen display that includes Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard features. The top trim, the Limited, includes leather upholstery panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, LED headlights, and a navigation system.
Evans has teased news regarding the SUV front for Hyundai, including next year’s model that is expected to be the best yet. Its lineup also now includes the Kona Electric and the Ionic hybrid in the electric department, to further at more options for consumers.
