The companies first teamed up in April of 2016 to produce a road map for developing a \u201chyper-connected and intelligent car.\u201d Now, Cisco is working with Hyundai to achieve a mutual goal of developing a hardware platform for smart vehicle solutions.<\/p>\n<p>At Cisco Live Las Vegas, Hyundai Motor Company\u2019s Research and Development director Paul Choo spoke about the automaker\u2019s plans to move from a pattern of reactive response to customer to demand to a philosophy of proactive response to the automotive market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing a higher demand for more sophisticated network architecture infrastructure in vehicles,\u201d Choo said. He added that Hyundai\u2019s partnership with Cisco is unique because the two companies are working \u201cshoulder to shoulder\u201d to develop the \u201cplatform and architecture\u201d for the next big \u201chyper-connected\u201d vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe partnership with Cisco will definitely help us accelerate the adoption of technology,\u201d Choo explained.<\/p>\n<p>James Peters, vice president of Cisco Connected Car, expanded on Choo\u2019s comments, adding, \u201cWe\u2019re working on\u2026 infrastructure [related] things right now\u2026 trying to get that full connectivity so that we can start to move the traffic around more efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peters is referring to the companies\u2019 plans to develop improved Bluetooth smartphone-to-car connectivity. In the past, the tech has been regarded as dangerous due to its ability to distract drivers. Cisco and Hyundai will make five- and seven-year software updates compatible across any hardware being implemented within vehicles in order to \u201cfuture proof\u201d them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, it\u2019s about opening up the car, it\u2019s about driving down some costs, but adding in features in terms of over-the-air updates and functionality, increasing the speed inside the car to move that data, putting some compression in there to make it efficient,\u201d Peters stated in a recent interview. \u201cIt all kind of plays into where we\u2019ll be going with machine learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Your Hyundai won\u2019t turn into an AI-powered autobot any time soon, but Cisco and Hyundai are working on opening up the automaker\u2019s vehicles with higher-speed Ethernet connectivity.
